Wednesday 29 January
Esperance, Australia

In this wonderfully remote western Australian town, experience nature at its most diverse and pristine, from untouched bushland to Australia’s whitest beaches - where even kangaroos love to sunbake. Esperance is French for hope and it’s the French that are credited with Esperance’s discovery. The town was named after L’Espérance, one of two French ships that anchored at Observatory Point sheltering from a storm. The Archipelago was named the Recherche after the second ship. A decade later, Matthew Flinders sailed the glorious waters of the Bay of Isles, discovering and naming gems such as Thistle Cove and Lucky Bay - Australia’s whitest beach. Whalers, sealers and pirates followed, as did pastoralists and miners, keen to cash in on free land and a gold boom at Kalgoorlie, to the north. Today, tourism, agriculture and fishing steer this stunning coastal community’s economy.
Onboard meals: breakfast, lunch & dinner

Thursday 30 January
Albany, Australia

On December 26, 1826 - Boxing Day - Major Edmund Lockyer and his party of convicts and soldiers landed at Princess Royal Harbor to establish a penal colony. Originally named Frederickstown in honor of the Duke of York and Albany, the first European settlement in Western Australia was renamed Albany in 1832. Thanks to its superb harbor, the town quickly became a busy port. Albany served as a coaling station for steam ships, as a commercial outlet for the rich farms of the interior, and as a base for the highly profitable whaling industry. The whaling station at Frenchman Bay was the last whaling station in all Australia, closing in 1978. Today it is home to Whale World, one of the world’s largest whaling museums. This small city of some 25,000 souls is off the beaten track. Which makes exploring all the more fun, whether visiting Whale World Museum or touring one of the area’s excellent wineries.

Stop briefly at the infamous Dog Cemetery; a shrine to man’s best friend and an integral part of farming life. Then visit Hippo’s Yawn, a rock formation which resembles a hippo yawning. You will then break for an Aussie country style lunch at the Wildflower Shop. Continue on to see the spectacular Wave Rock and the ancient Gnamma Holes. Whilst here, visit either a Wildlife Park, view a unique Antique Lace Collection even featuring lace from Lady Diana, or visit an amazing Toy Soldier Museum. Leaving Wave Rock, visit The Humps and finally Mulka’s Cave. Return to Perth via a different route and stop at the quaint country town for afternoon tea (own expense).
