Darwin, Northern Territory

Today you will be transferred from the Darwin Airport to your hotel. The rest of your day will be at leisure to explore Darwin.

Friday
Today make the most of your Hop on Hop off pass. Don’t miss a thing aboard the open-top double decker tour of Darwin complemented by an entertaining and informative commentary. This pass allows you the freedom to plan your own itinerary and visit the landmarks and attractions at your own pace. There are 10 stops including Crocosauras Cove, Doctor’s Gully, Cullen Bay Marina, Darwin Military Museum and Waterfront Precinct.

Saturday
This morning begin your overnight Kakadu and East Alligator River tour. Depart Darwin and travel along the Arnhem Highway, passing major river systems and wetland regions, into Kakadu National Park. The national park covers 20,000 square kilometres of landscape varying from rocky escarpment that is home to historic Aboriginal rock art dating back thousands of years, to the floodplains that are abundant with wildlife. Visit Warradjan Cultural Centre to view the informative displays depicting the traditions of the Aboriginal people in Kakadu. Join your local guide on a cruise of Yellow Water Billabong Cruise. Search for saltwater crocodiles and the colourful range of birdlife for which this region is renowned. After lunch, stop at Nourlangie, where your Driver Guide will lead you on a walk to view the rock art galleries.

Sunday
This morning head off with your Driver Guide to explore the World Heritage Area of Ubirr, where you’ll climb up through the ancient Aboriginal rock art galleries, believed to be 20,000 years old, to the lookout for the view over the surrounding wetlands. Join the Guluyambi Cruise along the East Alligator River. An Aboriginal guide will provide an insight into their culture, including local mythology, the river’s abundant food chain, as well as bush survival skills. With special permission of the local people, you are able to go ashore in Arnhem Land. Visit the Bowali Visitor Centre before returning to Darwin.

Today is a free day in Darwin to explore.

Tuesday
Boarding early for the drive to Litchfield National Park you will be entertained by your Driver Guide. The gorgeous, historical town of Batchelor is the gateway to Litchfield National Park. Today, Batchelor’s townsfolk love to host visitors to Litchfield National Park and it’s here that you’ll enjoy morning tea (own expense) at one of their local cafés. View the termite mounds found at Litchfield National Park and the spectacular double waterfall of Florence Falls from a high vantage point, before making your way down the stairs to take a dip in the gorgeous plunge pool. One of the three major waterfalls along the western face of the Tabletop Range is Tolmer Falls. Marvel at the water cascading down into the deep waterhole at the base of the falls, home to several colonies of rare ghost bats and orange horseshoe bats. Included in your tour is lunch at the Litchfield Café. Relax, enjoy the company of your fellow travellers and if you’re ready for another swim, Wangi Falls is the most accessible of rock pools and is a perfect spot to take another dip.

Wednesday
Today you will be transferred from your hotel to the Darwin Rail Terminal to board The Ghan Expedition and travel by rail from Darwin to Adelaide. Prepare for a journey of comfort, relaxation and a touch of adventure, as the legendary Ghan takes you deep into the heart of Australia. This afternoon you will arrive into Katherine, home of the stunning Katherine Gorge and rich in Indigenous history.
