With almost 60% of the world’s whale population located in Australia, there are no surprises it contains some of the best whale watching locations and up close and personal encounters. In South Australia, the most iconic destination to view these majestic mammals of the sea is the Head of the Bight region. Located within the Great Australian Bight Marine Park, this region of Australia’s southern coast supports the calving and gathering of the endangered Southern Right whales. The Bight is also one of the country’s most scenic areas where the arid desert of the Nullarbor meets the vast Indian Ocean forming the renowned dramatic towering sand coloured cliffs against the vibrant blue waters scene.
Between May and October, the whales gather inshore to breed, birth and rest prior to their migration to the Southern Ocean, adding to the already rich biodiversity found here including endangered Australian sea lions, dolphins and more. Hundreds of these magnificent creatures are now spotted, creating not only a wonderful sight but important step in environmental conservation, coming back from the brink of extinction.
Whilst the clifftops offer a spectacular viewing point to see the whales, being able to watch the action from the water is the ultimate experience here. Board a specially designed whale watching vessel from Fowlers Bay and enjoy an immersive experience as you view the whales up close in their natural habitat while listening to expert knowledge from the onboard guide.
