Aurora Australis Sleeping Train

Embrace old-world charm as you embark on an enchanting adventure through regional New South Wales aboard the Aurora Australis sleeping train – the ex-Southern Aurora. Celebrate Australia’s diverse history and rich culture with visits to regional towns, gardens, and attractions. Travel on rail lines which don’t have scheduled passenger services, making this a real adventure. Everyday there is a different view of New South Wales’s coastline, and you’ll witness the North Coast in a way you never have before.

During your first day, the Aurora Australis takes you over the picturesque Hawkesbury River, alongside Mullet Creek and through the ‘Venice of Australia’ to Brisbane Water. As you journey onwards, the Gloucester River merges with the Manning River, seamlessly guiding the train through Taree and onward to Kempsey on the Macleay River. Settle in for the night at a nearby siding in Kempsey, where the rhythmic flow of the Macleay River provides the perfect backdrop for a peaceful evening.

Day 2 encompasses the iconic sights of Port Macquarie & beyond. A scenic lunch cruise awaits, inviting you to immerse yourself in the tranquillity of Port Macquarie's waters. Keep an eye out for playful dolphins, graceful turtles, and soaring osprey and sea eagles. The Hastings River, with its serene rural landscapes and abundant wildlife, paints a captivating backdrop. As we return to the train after a fulfilling lunch, the North Coast beckons with fascinating landscapes. For around five hours, you’ll journey through diverse scenery—starting inland before tracing the coastline past charming Sawtell and vibrant Coffs Harbour. The route then meanders inland again, following the Orana River and winding through banana plantations as we climb.

Day 3 will bring you to the end of the journey aboard Aurora Australis, but before you disembark the train, you’ll have time to discover the iconic sights of Byron Bay. Marvel at the panoramic vista from the iconic lighthouse, located at the eastern-most point of Australia, offering a breathtaking view of the Pacific Ocean. As you explore the charming town, you'll have free time to immerse yourself in the vibrant spirit that makes Byron Bay so enchanting.
