The Book Thief, Markus Zusak
A beautifully written novel and although based in World War II has an uplifting story of resilience and focus on the power of reading and writing.
Becoming, Michelle Obama
A wonderful autobiographical depiction of her life and an insight to the White House and American politics.
Movida’s Guide to Barcelona, Frank Camorra & Richard Cornish
Part travel guide part foodie gastronomy journey, this book takes you to Barcelona through the eyes of Frank Camorra and Richard Cornish. This might not be the best book to read in lockdown as it will inevitably leave you longing to fly straight to Barcelona for some Paella and Sangria!
Tales of a Female Nomad, Rita Golden Gelman
An absolute favourite I have read a few times. I loved reading about this older woman who is an adventurous modern day nomad who travels on a shoestring without a plan. She is an inspirational person and it’s so interesting to read about her observations of local life and her amazing experiences as she moves around the world. Great for anyone who dreams about escaping the everyday.
What I was Doing While You Were Breeding, Kristin Newman
Wanderlust, adventures and laughs. This story of a woman who did life differently will make you feel like trading in your kids/wife/husband for the fun life travelling as a single.
Only Two Seats Left, John Anderson
The incredible Contiki story by the founder. This read is entertaining, inspiring and fascinating to learn of the successes, failures and challenges of being a travel entrepreneur. A great read for anyone who has done a Contiki trip or wished they did!
The Guest List, Lucy Foley
I couldn’t put this book down and finished it very quickly as each chapter brought along another question that kept making me turn the pages. It’s a whodunnit, murder-mystery thriller novel that has a lot of twists. The story revolves around an exclusive wedding held on a remote island off Ireland and a group of old friends and family. Foley has also written The Hunting Party, which is another thriller that will keep you reading!
The Nightingale, Kristin Hannah
A story of two sisters living in France during World War II both navigating the challenges imposed upon them in different ways. It’s a journey of love, friendships, family, resilience, acceptance and triumph with a powerful insight into the roles French women played during and after the war, including their part in the French Resistance.
My Sister’s Keeper, Jodi Picoult
It’s thought provoking and so much better in book form than the movie.
