Just under 2 hours from Adelaide, you’ll find yourself in South Australia’s stunning Murray and Mallee region. Located in the central eastern part of South Australia from the Adelaide Hills to the Victorian border and covering approximately 36,720 square kilometres. Here you can experience some of the magic of the emotive Murray River.

Majestic landscapes

Experience the captivating tranquillity of one of the world’s longest rivers.  Golden limestone and red ochre cliff faces, sweeping turns and the sounds and sights of the vast birdlife variety nesting amongst the wetlands along the way. Sunrise and sunset accentuating the beauty of this spectacular wilderness landscape adorned with river red gums and the countless vineyards, orchards and farmlands that seemingly hug this majestic waterway’s path.

Diverse and ancient history

Discover the diverse and ancient history of this renowned river. From the very beginning various Aboriginal groups have lived along the lands, including the Ngarrindjeri people of the Riverland, the largest Aboriginal community in South Australia. Early settler history dates back to around 1824, when the river was discovered by European explorers and how the river became to be named, after Sir George Murray. It was the route to carry goods including wheat and wool and remains today a vital water source for millions of Australians and the economy as whole.

Cruising

Step back in time and experience the old-world charm of the river aboard a historic paddlesteamer. The PS Murray Princess is the largest inland paddlewheeler in the southern hemisphere and cruises the mighty Murray River between Mannum, Murray Bridge and Slater’s Station in South Australia. Offering a small ship holiday, catering for up to 120 passengers, it provides a unique cruise and touring option through this spectacular destination. Or perhaps a leisurely cruise on one of the many houseboats available to hire, from budget to luxury, and offering all the mod-cons for a memorable getaway.

Food and wine

Up and coming wine makers and boutique cellar doors are thriving in this region, offering different wine varieties thanks to the generally warmer climate. From the world-renowned winemakers of Banrock Station and Berri Estates to the family owned wineries of Burk Salter, organic Salena Estate or biodynamic Whistling Kite, a diverse wine trail awaits. Not to mention the award-winning distilleries and breweries in addition to the superb local produce, favoured by many chefs, it’s a foodie paradise.

River towns

Wonderful river ports enhance this region of the Murray including the historical Blanchetown, Mannum and Swan Reach. Townships steeped in history, quirky stories and warm country hospitality. Mannum offers an abundance of things to see and do and is favoured by many locals as a wonderful and relaxing holiday destination, evident by the growing number of river ‘shacks’ and seasonal events.
