Western Australia's famous wildflower season typically runs from June to October each year, beginning in the Pilbara the sweeping floral display then continues moving south to Perth and eventually down to the South West coast. It is considered one of the largest collections of wildflowers in the world with around 60% of the species only found in Australia. The spectacular and vivid floral spectacle is different every year with the annual variety of wildflowers dependant upon the preceding climatic conditions.

Covering such a vast region of the state, there are many iconic locations where these unique wildflowers can be viewed, even including the capital city of Perth. Kings Park and Botanic Garden in the city centre showcases an outstanding collection of Western Australia flora and remains to be one of the largest inner city parks in the world. Enjoy the sweeping views over the city from Mount Eliza, relax at one of the cafes or restaurants and walk through the treetops via the Lotterywest Federation Walkway.

The world-renowned Margaret River region is of course famous for its world class wines and artisan produce but it’s also home to a plethora of vivid wildflowers with wonderful coastal walks amongst the colourful floral displays of pimelea, coral vine and acacia with panoramic oceanviews to go with it. The region is also recognised as one of the most biodiverse in the world with conservation key in preserving this sensitive environment. Try the Cape Track for one of the best places to see these wildflowers in bloom.

One of the many reasons people visit Albany is for its wildflowers in Spring. Popular Stirling National Park is home to more than 1,500 species of plants along with a myriad of birdlife, lighting up the various walking trails during this season. Mid-late September is generally when the floral displays here are at their peak (subject to weather conditions) with the South Coast being considered a hot spot for viewing.

Esperance is another beautiful coastal location of Western Australia to stop by and even has its own seasonal route to follow, the Esperance Wildflower Trail. Cape Le Grand National Park presents a wonderful opportunity to experience this ruggedly beautiful and pristine coastal environment along with one of the country’s best rated beaches, Lucky Bay. Look out for the Banksia Speciosa and Banksia Pulchella wildflower varietals here in addition to the local wildlife of pygmy honey possums, bandicoots and more.

Goldfields and Kalgoorlie tends to surprise many with its diverse and beautiful local flora, with the entire Goldfields region home to several existing and proposed nature reserves, providing a wonderful environment for wildflowers to flourish here. Look out for pink, yellow and white everlastings and dainty paper daisies during the Goldfields Wildflower Season in addition to the flowering eucalypts and striking array of other native flowers during Spring. Kalgoorlie is brimming with some of the world’s best architecture and a great variety of sights to see and activities to do, all the while welcoming with its captivating charm.
