Welcome to our comprehensive guide for your first cruise. Cruising is a magnificent way to experience the wonders of the world while indulging in the comforts of your floating home and discovering new destinations. There really is a cruise for every taste and preference. But, before you set sail, it's essential to have a solid understanding of what to expect, how to prepare, and how to make the most of your maiden voyage on the high seas. Even seasoned cruisers may learn a new tip or two! Let’s dive right in.

1.   Take your time to explore the ship once you’re onboard – you may be surprised what you find! Walk around, make mental notes of where you’d like revisit. Plus, get a hold of an activity schedule and explore.

2. Book your shore excursions in advance so you don’t miss out on something you really have your heart set on.

3. This takes us to the next point, although going on shore excursions is an amazing way to see a destination, don’t be afraid to do your own thing if you want to get off the ship and explore on your own. Just be back in time before the ship leaves again! Hint: make sure your watch or phone clock is set at the right time.

4. The specialty restaurants are worth the price onboard, make sure you always try at least one. These can fill up quickly, particularly the popular restaurants, so to avoid disappointment, book any speciality restaurants as early as you can.

5. Arrive at your departure city a day or more before your cruise to give yourself time for any unforeseen delays with flights.

6. Choose your cruise line carefully as well as the ship – it’ll make all the difference. Different cruise lines cater for different demographics and experiences. A little bit of research always helps, or better yet, talk to us about the options available and which ones are most suitable for your needs.

7. Understand the types of cabins available to you.

  • Inside: This is the most economical option. The room has 4 walls without a window (although some ships feature virtual portholes to give the illusion of a window), has a bed and a bathroom. This option is best suited to those who want to save a bit of money and spend most of their time exploring and experiencing the ship and destination.
  • Outside: this is the midway option. This room will have a porthole to see outside to create a greater sense of space and presence on the open sea, whilst still coming in at an affordable price.
  • Balcony: Probably the most popular option, as the cost of the upgrade affords you great value, with your own private opening to a balcony outside and take in the ocean air. It’s a great option for all, but particularly for those who like having their own private retreat.
  • Suite: For those who like the best. This changes your personal space from a bedroom to a living space, often taking on more of an apartment feel.

8. If you are prone to sea sickness, be sure to prepare accordingly and bring seasickness tablets or bands.

9. Consider purchasing a drinks package, particularly if you know you will make good use of it with cocktails! If you don’t drink, this might not be the best option.

10. If you are able to, take the stairs, as there’s often a line for the elevators, particularly during peak meal times.

11. Most cruise lines have their own app which allow you to personalise your cruise. Be sure to download this as it helps enhance your onboard experience and often enables you to pre-purchase add-ons at a discounted rate.

12. Pack light and unpack before the ship sets sail. It helps to settle you in and make the most of the space. It’s always nice to feel organised!

13. Wait until the end of the cruise for some great offers and discounts on duty free shopping.
