Fraser Island is the largest sand island in the world and certainly one of the most unique with the natural phenomenon of tall rainforests growing from sand dunes. The entire island is World Heritage-listed, recognized for its exceptional natural beauty, brimming with vast stretches of white sandy coastline, striking sand cliffs and azure ocean waters.
It houses the purest strain of dingoes in Australia and is one of the world’s best destinations for whale watching. This is due to their migration through here from August to October and for the fact these majestic mammals take their time here thanks to the calm and sheltered waters.
The award-winning Kingfisher Bay Resort takes pride of place on the sunset side of the island, blending seamlessly with the surrounding nature for a true eco-resort experience. Relax by the pool, enjoy a relaxing or rejuvenating treatment at the Island Day Spa or be spoilt for choice by the myriad of ranger-guided activities available. One of the resort’s signature restaurants, Sand & Wood, showcases a menu reflecting the local bush heritage in addition to a range of internationally inspired dishes. Enjoy a leisurely breakfast, lunch or dinner here overlooking the main pool and native greenery.
Fraser Island is teeming with natural beauty sites. Seventy Five Mile Beach being one of them. The picture of the sparkling Coral Sea meeting the vast stretch of sand is iconic to the island which also doubles as an official national highway and light aircraft landing strip! It is also home to the intriguing Maheno Shipwreck, with many a story to tell. The historic ocean liner broke away mid-tow and drifted toward the shoreline where it has managed to maintain its core structure and therefore become quite the landmark.
Did you know that Fraser island is one of the best spots in the world for whale watching and regarded as Australia's number one? Each season, being August to October, the majestic Humpback Whales not only pass through the island but soak up and enjoy the calm and sheltered waters of the western bay, stopping to socialise, play and nuture their young. A whale watching cruise is a must not only for keen whale watchers but for anyone appreciative of witnessing nature at its most spectacular.
Another idyllic attraction to visit is scenic Eli Creek, responsible for pouring millions of litres of fresh water into the ocean every hour. Popular for swimming, relax in the invigorating waters as you float downstream towards the ocean, with a boardwalk that follows the creek for a different perspective.
Lake Mackenzie is a must. A picture-perfect clear lake surrounded by pure white sand, filled just by rainwater. This utterly beautiful and serene location is one of the most visited, and for good reason.
Central Station is an immersion into the rainforest, navigable via the boardwalk which winds though some of the world’s largest ferns and around Wanggoolba Creek, it is a spectacular display of the island’s flora and fauna.
