Undoubtedly one of the most popular times to travel to Japan is during the spring time or ‘sakura’ for cherry blossom season. While the blossom season forecast changes each year, the peak period is generally late March to early April, with Yoshinoyama (or Mount Yoshino) considered to be the spot for the best viewing for centuries now. In saying that, the country has over 1,000 locations where Sakura can be found for the ancient tradition of hanami – or flower viewing, along with festivals and events that celebrate this annual celebration. Expect to see blankets laid out across the country’s parks full of people enjoying picnics, socialising and sipping on sake or tea beneath the trees. Below we look at some of the most famed spots in Japan for the best views and backdrops.
Yoshino – Kansai
As mentioned above, Yoshino/Mount Yoshino is Japan’s most famous location when it comes to cherry blossom viewing thanks to the thousands of Sakura trees that spread across the Kii Mountains surrounding Yoshino city.
Himeji Castle – Kansai
A postcard perfect scene with the striking white castle, dating back to the early 17th century, admired for its unique architecture of the time. It is both a UNESCO World-heritage listed site and Japanese National Treasure, with its grounds full of cherry blossom trees making it the prettiest time to visit.
Tokyo
Even the bustling capital city itself houses a healthy amount of Sakura trees with Ueno Park, Shinjuku Gyoen and the Chidorigafuchi Moat, near the Imperial Palace being the most popular places to see and enjoy the colourful displays.
Hirosaki Castle - Tohoku
Another stunning castle setting that is considered by many to have the most beautiful cherry blossom in Japan. Hirosaki Castle dates back to the early 1600s and is a must-visit when in the north of Japan. Hirosaki Park hosts the annual Sakura Festival which features the famous Sakura tunnel and the illumination of the trees and castle at night.
Kyoto
With fewer tourists generally than the above spots, Kyoto is another much loved city to enjoy the cherry blossom season in. Maruyama Park boasts a beautiful display with the centrepiece - a tall weeping cherry tree, lit up at night. Also popular is the scenic Philosopher’s Path with hundreds of trees lining both side of the canal.
With these and many other incredible places to experience this hugely celebrated annual event, visiting Japan during cherry blossom season promises to be quite spectacular.
