A quintessential exploration of the Queensland outback beckons. Traversing the tracks between Brisbane and Longreach on a traditional diesel hauled train is the Spirit of the Outback rail journey. Passing through the ever-changing, rugged landscapes and historic outback towns along the way, it makes for a legendary rail experience like no other.
Longreach, famous for the Australian Stockman's Hall of Fame, Outback Heritage Centre and the Qantas Founders Museum, is the heart of the Queensland outback situated on the Tropic of Capricorn. It has a thriving cattle and wool industry and a fascinating history of Aboriginal culture, stockmen and pioneers, not to mention it’s warm and welcoming country hospitality. The 26 hour rail journey passes through more authentic outback towns such as Barcaldine, Emerald and Blackwater with Queensland’s vibrant capital, Brisbane, putting its cosmopolitan flair in for a contrasting taste of city life.
Economy
Economy guests enjoy a comfortable reclining seat and panoramic windows to view the beautiful scenery and a selection of quality meals and drinks are available to purchase from The Galley. The Economy Lounge provides another retreat to mingle with your fellow travellers and enjoy the unique comradery and stories that are the added bonus of a rail journey experience.
First Class
First Class is the alternate option and what we always recommend for extra comfort. Offering the choice of single or twin berth sleepers, with shower facilities located at the end of each sleeper carriage and restrooms at the end of all carriages. Single Berths feature a wash basin, vanity mirror, bedding and towel and Twin Berths also feature an additional wardrobe and table. First Class guests also benefit from exclusive all-inclusive dining in the Tuckerbox Restaurant with a regionally inspired outback menu, prepared by chefs, using some of Queensland’s best produce for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The Shearers Rest provides First Class customers with an exclusive lounge area to sit back, relax with a cool beverage or light refreshment (which can be purchased throughout the journey), read a newspaper or just watch the scenery go by.
On board entertainment is another added plus in First Class,
apart from the epic scenery, and includes a selection of movies, television
shows, documentaries and music via handheld tablets. There are a limited number
of tablets available, therefore we recommend taking your own tablet or reading
matter as an alternate option if you so wish.
If you are considering an inspiring train holiday, this rail
journey of discovery certainly captures the true spirit of Queensland’s outback
and is likely to capture the heart of its fortunate guests.
For the serious train enthusiasts, this trip combines
perfectly with a Brisbane stopover and the Great Southern rail itinerary,
travelling the unique south eastern corner, between Brisbane and Adelaide.
