Does travelling over the Christmas period conjure up pictures of long lines, big crowds and snappy staff? Well, whilst this may be the case, we can give you some tips to help alleviate the stress so you can still get in the festive spirit!

Knowledge is power

Pre-planning for travel over a holiday period always pays off. Some attractions or major sights can be closed over the Christmas period, or even operate on reduced hours, so to reduce any disappointment when you arrive, research this prior to departing. Alternatively, your destination may be holding various holiday events which could enhance your sightseeing experience and some may even be free, look this up before you go.

Online check in

Most airlines now offer an online check-in option on their website which in turn can save you time at the airport, queueing unnecessarily. If you aren’t yet tech savvy, that’s ok, a family member or friend could help do it with you or even for you with a few personal details.

Extra Christmas luggage?

Will you be taking Christmas presents with you and even perhaps bringing received gifts home? Most airlines also offer the option to pre-purchase baggage prior to your flight directly on their website, which can save you not only time at the airport but it is substantially cheaper! Remember to still pack the valuables in your hand luggage if they fit.

Home alone

It can be a good idea to make your home appear ‘lived in’ while you are away. Ask a neighbour, family member or friend to collect your mail, put your bins out and even water the garden over the hot summer, to save you returning to a brown, lifeless garden. If an extra pair of hands is not an option, not to worry, jump online or head in-store to Australia Post to arrange for your mail to be held, re-distribute your rubbish to public bins nearby just before you leave and if you love your garden, look into an automated watering system. There are also several and inexpensive timer options to have lamps turn on and off as you would if you were home.

Look after your furry friends

We have a duty of care as pet owners for the welfare of our animals. Penalties apply and range from state to state for the abandonment of animals, which includes going away on holiday. Arrange for a friend or family member to have them or book them in as soon as you can to a pet hotel or short-term care facility as they become booked out very quickly over the Christmas period.
