Is your ideal holiday a relaxing, tranquil resort escape? Or maybe it’s all about the food and experiences? Or perhaps it’s travelling with like-minded travellers enjoying unique experiences together? Find out your travel style and how other travellers enjoy their holidays and why!

Flop and drop

For some of us this is exactly what a holiday is for. Total relaxation and a change of scenery without much of a need to lift a finger. Generally, this type of travel style involves warm sunny weather, lines of palm trees, a picturesque coastal location, an inviting resort pool or situated under an umbrella, refreshing drink in one hand and a gripping novel in the other. Our favourite flop and drop destination in Australia would have to be Villa Beach Palm Cove, in Tropical North Queensland, for its stunning beachfront location, beautifully appointed apartment accommodation in year-round temperate weather and a short walk to amazing restaurants.

BONUS: No early morning starts, schedules to adhere to, foreign transport to navigate or an abundance of luggage to pack.

KEEP IN MIND: If you prefer variety, pick a destination with good dining options within walking distance.

Out and about

These holidays are for the travellers who want to see everything and do everything in the given timeframe. The early bird catches the worm as they say and so does this holidaymaker. Organisation and pre-planning is the key, whether you are travelling solo, with a partner or family, each day is maximised to its full potential of sightseeing. This travel style usually involves a mixture of set tours and self-navigation. For us, Adelaide is the perfect holiday for the see and do everything traveller as it is super easy to navigate and it offers world class food and wine, history, culture, arts and excellent day or extended tours.

BONUS: Horizons are expanded, it ticks off the major sights and icons of the destination/s and you become wiser for it.

KEEP IN MIND: Consider at least one long, leisurely lunch to recharge and people watch, it’s a great local experience to enjoy and can still be interesting!

The slower the better

Slow Travel is quickly gaining popularity mainly due to our increasingly fast paced, technology reliant society. It’s a travel style that offers a complete unplug and recharge all the while offering an entire experience. Just like the slow food analogy, it’s all about taking your time and connecting with your actions. This may come in the form of an all-inclusive leisurely cruise, an unrushed and fascinating rail expedition through vast, changing landscapes or immersing yourself into the local life and culture of your destination. We can’t go past the iconic Australian Ghan rail journey for an incredible slow travel immersive experience like no other.

BONUS: It’s a balanced blend between ‘flop and drop’ and ‘out and about’ and can give a much deeper and greater insight into a destination.

KEEP IN MIND: This is all about being open to the experience as opposed to just the aesthetics of the destination itself.

Better together

Escorted holidays have certainly remained a very popular travel style throughout the years from young to old. Why? It’s easy, as everything is taken care of from start to finish. You can just sit back in a comfortable air-conditioned coach as you pass by everyday local life and the surrounding scenery as you are fed the history and information of your locations and stop at the main sights. Escorted holidays can range from large coach to intimate and boutique touring to suit different preferences. We love our friendly and talented Holidays of Australia & the World staff who are always creating amazing escorted itineraries with the luxury of their experience and professionalism.

BONUS: It’s a fantastic way to meet like-minded travellers or even make potential new friends, it offers extra comfort and peace of mind, further time to relax and enjoy yourself and is great for first time travellers.

KEEP IN MIND: To maximise your itinerary and places visited there can be frequent early starts and some late nights too.

Hitting the open road

This travel style can either be with the familiarity of your own motor or hiring a vehicle on arrival in your destination armed with either a large map or, more commonly these days, a satellite navigation device. It can either be a completely independent itinerary, a suggested itinerary or a pre-booked accommodation package. Or your accommodation may already be included if it’s a motorhome or your own caravan or tent. In Australia, we love Tasmania or the Northern Territory for an unrushed, easy self-drive with spectacular sights and landscapes.

BONUS: It gives you the freedom of your own schedule and stopping when you want to, allowing for less ‘planned’ and more potential for spontaneity.

KEEP IN MIND: Allow for unforeseen conditions, be it traffic, weather etc., during peak periods it’s a good idea to pre-book some accommodation and remember to be open minded and go with the flow.

Like-minded travellers

A holiday with a group of friends or travellers with a common interest be it arts, food and wine, culture, historical or even recreational interests such as walking or golfing is ideal for travellers with a passion. This is a great travel style for those with a special interest as the holiday is usually tailored around the best the interest or passion has to offer in the destination. Our resident team member, Pip, is an avid golfer and is always creating new golfing holidays each year due to popular demand!

BONUS: An enhanced travel experience due to the combination of your passion and a holiday in one, it presents an opportunity to meet new people that share your interests or enjoy time with existing friends, there could also be the added bonus of keeping fit while holidaying!

KEEP IN MIND: Some special interests may require some preparation prior to the trip and a could be a good idea to check with the tour leader.
